FACULTY ACTIVITIES

Pamela Jennings participated in the NAMAC (National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture) conference Pull Focus, in Seattle, Washington in early October. She presented on a panel titled Agents of Change, moderated by Christina Yang from the Kitchen with Paul Kaiser (NY based artists) and Shawn Brixely (University of Washington) http://www.pullfocus.org/

Patricia Bellan-Gillen, Carol Kumata and Martin Prekop will exhibit in Artists Crossing Lines along with alumni Ron Desmett (MFA ‘79) and Andrew Johnson (MFA ‘94) at the Hodge Gallery at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, November 1 through January 3, 2003. The exhibit opens November 1, 6-9pm.

Susanne Slavick will participate on a Foundations Panel at the NASAD (National Schools of Art and Design) Annual Meeting, October 17-20, in Aspen, CO.

Elaine A. King was a research fellow sponsored by the Academy of Science and Arts, at the Central European Cultural Institute in Budapest. During this time she discussed ongoing changes in global contemporary art and culture with a diverse range of people. She gave a lecture at the Ernst Museum titled Art Criticism/Theory In a Post-Post-Structuralist Time. Also, she delivered the paper The PM Principle - People, Power, Politics & Money at the Central European Cultural Institute in Budapest, as well as conducted a seminar on ethics and private money in the realm of the museum sector. In Prague, King participated in the planning session for the Third Prague Biennial that will take place in 2004.

Joe Mannino lectured and conducted graduate critiques at Portland State University and Linfield College in Oregon.

ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

Patricia Colvin Burson’s (BFA ‘71) exhibit, Available Light, featuring 31 paintings at GSIA’s Posner Hall at Carnegie Mellon University runs through December 16, 2002.

ROY (BFA ‘84) is breaking in her new studio this fall preparing works for a solo exhibit at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and group exhibits, Found Object Art at The Works Gallery in Philadelphia, Comic Release: Negotiating Identity for a New Generation at Carnegie Mellon's Miller Gallery, and Charmed Lives at Facere Art Jewelry in Seattle. Seven of her pieces will be included in Art Jewelry Today, to be published by Dona Z. Meilach next year. roystudio.com

Jessica Reeves-Cohen (BFA ‘91) presented A-Line VII on June 24 in Central Park, NYC, Score for Thinking About Error and Progress II on July 7 at The Web in NYC (world premiere - http://www.sundaynewgenre.com) and an excerpt from Questionable Behavior on August 5 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, in Scotland (European premier). Questionable Behavior was presented August 31 and September 1, 2 and 14 at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Philadelphia, PA (U.S. premier http://www.pafringe.com) The Language of Trees (world premier) was presented September 18 at Hudson Valley Community College in conjunction with a solo exhibition of photographs, video and drawings which is up until October 19. http://www.hvcc.edu/teachinggallery She has given artist lectures at Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA (April) and Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY (September).

Marc Fischer (BFA ‘93), with Temporary Services presented Puerto Rico ‘02 (en ruta) in San Juan and other locations in Puerto Rico, October 6-12. The work features large portable (some wearable) plastic forms, inflated by leaf blowers and miniature battery-operated fans, unleashed in public spaces. An accompanying CD has been produced, remixing the soundtrack from West Side Story and “incorporating parallel ideas in the West Coast gangsta rap of N.W.A. along with a kitchen sink of other sonic turmoil.” http://www.temporaryservices.org.

Laura Domenic (BFA ‘96) is exhibiting with Group A in Stratified at Artist Image Resource in Pittsburgh, October 12 - November 8.

Marinda Stretavsky (BFA ‘00) is exhibiting a mixed media sculpture entitled Compassion for Sale with Group A in Stratified at Artist Image Resource in Pittsburgh, October 12 - November 8. Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Friday, 11am - 4pm.

Carrie Schneider (BFA ‘01) has a solo exhibit of photographs, 88, at Garfield Artworks, 4931 Penn Avenue. There will be an opening reception on Friday, October 18, 7-11pm and a closing reception on November 1, 7-11pm.

Todd Pavlisko (MFA ‘02) is exhibiting in 48 Hours at Lake Erie College in Cleveland through November 29. The exhibit opened October 4 with a 48 hour action/performance.

Sean Bidic, M.D. (MFA ‘02) just completed his first three month rotation (of eight in total for his fellowship) in craniofacial and pediatric reconstruction. His time was split between repairing facial fractures and congenital birth defects, mainly of the head and hands. He is now beginning a hand surgery rotation.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ACTIVITIES

On October 6th, Laura Shaffer and senior, James Knopf, performed Crimesolver at eight public locations in Pittsburgh, a response to their arrest the previous weekend at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund actions in Washington, D.C. where they “bore witness to police crime and brutality.” As non-violent demonstrators, they embraced for an hour in the very cuffs in which they were arrested. Crimesolver also featured the release of a 28 page publication detailing the actions in D.C., complete with first hand accounts, legal observation, and photography not available in the mainstream media.

GRADUATE STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Blithe Riley and Adam Davies received $500 each in Graduate Student Assembly Conference Funds. Blithe attended the Pull Focus Conference in Seattle on October 2 and Adam will attend the Sky Art Conference, sponsored by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture in Delphia/Icaria, October 15-20. These funds enable more Carnegie Mellon graduate students to either attend or make presentations/exhibit their work at key conferences/ exhibitions in their fields.
