| FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES | James Duesing's Artist of the Year exhibit at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts was reviewed by Mary Thomas in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. http://www.pittsburghpostgazette.com/pg/04295/399150.stm. Elaine A. King, Professor of Art History and Theory, has been invited by the Museo des Artes in San Juan, Puerto Rico to guest curate the retrospective exhibition of Mari Mater. She will work with the museum in organizing the catalogue and education programs. The show is scheduled to open in 2006. Bruce Erikson, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, is in the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts' Annual Mid-Atlantic Exhibition in New Castle, PA. The exhibition was juried by Peter Plagens, art critic for Newsweek magazine and runs from October 10 - November 9. Bruce has a solo exhibition entitled, Unravel at Burnell Roberts Triangle Gallery at Sinclair Community College, Dayton, OH. The exhibition runs from November 9 until December 9, 2004. Bruce also has three original lithographs in the fall edition of the Snowy Egret, the nation's oldest journal on nature writing. The lithographs were drawn on location at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis, MO and Phipps Conservatory, Pittsburgh, PA. Clayton Merrell, Associate Professor of Art, participates in a Roswell Artist-in-Residence Current Fellows Exhibition at Santa Fe Community College in New Mexico, October 14 through November 24. http://www.rair.org. Susanne Slavick is participating in Collaborations, (collaborating with Billie Giese-Vella in Plays Well with Others) at Northern Illinois University Art Museum's Chicago Gallery, November 12 through December 18. http://www.vpa.niu.edu/museum/html/chicagogllry.html. Nathan Martin (BFA '99), is currently a Research Fellow at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry and Adjunct Professor of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. His current work with Carbon Defense League is a collaborative mapping project, MapHub, and he is writing a book titled Critical Deviant Practice planned for release in 2005. This October 20-24, he participated in Teaching Interactivity: Critical Media at Universidade Lusofona de Humanidades e Technologias in Lisbon, Portugal. On November 11, he will present Towards Critical Deviant Practice at the Dutch Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF04) in Rotterdam. He is also involved in MaMa http://mi2.hr in Zagreb, Croatia, November 13 and 14. Golan Levin, Assistant Professor of Art, is exhibiting
in Digital Selections: Work from the New York Digital Salon at
Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI through November
6. Andrew Johnson, Associate Professor of Art, has a solo
installation, Cleave, at Urban Institute of Contemporary Art

Harvey Breverman (BFA '56) has a solo exhibit, Humanist Impulses: Selected Drawings and Prints, that occupies two galleries, the University at Buffalo Gallery in the Center for the Arts and the UB Anderson Gallery. The exhibit features over 100 paintings and drawings from the 1980's to the present as well as a print survey. It runs October 1 - December 31 and is accompanied by a fully illustrated color catalogue with three essays. http://www.ubartgalleries.buffalo.edu. Joyce Kozloff (BFA '64) is currently an artist-in-residence at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France. She will participate in Carnegie Mellon's School of Art Spring 2005 Lecture Series on January 13 before traveling to Hawaii to conduct a Mapping Workshop at the Hui No'Eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao. She will also lecture at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on February 7. Her work will be included in Contemporary Women Artists: New York from January 19 through February 11, 2005 at Indiana State's University Art Gallery in Terre Haute. Susan Schwalb (BFA '65) has recently updated her website to include several artist book projects http://www.susanschwalb.com. The Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) recently purchased her drawing Strata #154 , 1997, 18"x18", done on clay coated paper using multiple metals (gold, copper, brass and aluminum). The Danforth Museum of Art, Framingham, MA just acquired Palimpsest XXVI, 2000, 24"x24"x2" (silverpoint, acrylic on paper on wood), for its permanent collection and will include it in a November show of recent acquisitions. Greg Kwiatek (BFA '79) hosted an open studio at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, 323 West 39th Street, New York City this October. ROY (BFA '84) participates in the traveling exhibit, Comic Release: Negotiating Identity for a New Generation curated by Barbara Bloemink, Cooper Hewitt Museum and Vicky A. Clark, independent curator. The final travel venue is Art House (formerly Texas Fine Art Association) Austin, TX through 2004. The private collection of Tuan Lee (Singapore and London) purchased ROY’s Asia City Screen bracelet. The Society for Contemporary Craft was acting liaison. Christine Blair (BFA '89) has a solo exhibit, Natural & Chance Configurations, at George Billis Gallery, 511 West 25th Street, New York City, October 5-30. Opening reception: October 7, 6-8pm. Brian Dean Richmond (BFA '93) has a solo exhibit of paintings through October 24 at Pittsburgh Filmmakers Galleries, 477 Melwood Avenue, Pittsburgh. http://www.pghfilmmakers.org. Melissa Thorne (BFA '93) exhibits this fall in Microclimate, a faculty art exhibit and Blend, an exhibition of the work of three Los Angeles artists at the University of La Verne's Harris Art Gallery in La Verne, CA. The latter exhibit is up through November 22. Thorne's paintings are developed from models such as diagrams of cities, as well as from common textile objects, such as knitted and crocheted afghans, doilies, and potholders. Her work brings these traditionally non-art systems into play with the formal concerns of painting. Daniel Anthonisen (BFA '94) has a solo exhibition, River Reflections 2004, at Travis Gallery, New Hope, PA, November 6-27 with an opening reception on November 6 from 5-8pm. http://www.travisgallery.com. Michael Sullivan (BFA '02) is exhibiting in Salon: Possibilities in Painting at The Optimistic, Philadelphia, November-December, 2004. He was co-curator of One-Off, an art and performance event this September in Philadelphia. Peter Burr (BFA '02), Adam Grossi (BFA '03), Drew Pavelchak (BFA '03), Ben Rod (BFA Class of '03) and Cassandra C. Jones (MFA Class of '04) are exhibiting in Mintwood, at Future Tenant, October 8 through 30. Kristina Lazar (BFA '04) presents Give Peace a Chance at Paradise Gallery, Cleveland Heights, OH from October 9 through November 13. Cassandra C. Jones (MFA Class of '04) and Peter
Burr (BFA '02) did a month long artist residency this summer
at Hall Farm Center for Arts and Education in Vermont. While there, they
worked in collaboration with CMU Design graduate Christopher Doulgeris
on an animation/live music performance called Slow Dance that
comes complete with a glowing Gem inflatable set. Other CMU art graduates
in the animation show included Adam Grossi and Drew
Pavelchak, plus one HCII graduate Elliot Montgomery. They first
performed the show at the Harris Theatre, Pittsburgh in mid-August and,
this month Peter, Christopher and Cassandra took it on the road for a
short east coast tour to Greensboro, Baltimore, Montreal and Boston. It
was a great sucsess! |
