| FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES | Clayton Merrell has work in In Transition, at the Evagoras and Kathleen Lanitis Foundation, Limassol, Cyprus, which opened on Wednesday, October 4. Golan Levin's interactive visualization "Dumpster"
currently appears in Further Processing: Generative Art, Open Systems
at the Kunstverein Medienturm, Graz, and will also appear at the First
IEEE InfoVis Art Exhibition on October 25 in Baltimore. Levin will give
artist's presentations in the "Meet the Media Guru" lecture
series, on October 20 in Milan at the Mediateca Santa Teresa; in Progetto
INnet, at Villa Olmo Como, on October 21; and in DesignWeek Monterrey,
November 13 in Mexico. In November, he will present a paper at the International
Conference on Computer Music, in New Orleans, and his installation work
"Messa di Voce" will appear at the First Taipei International
Digital Art Festival in Taiwan. Kim Beck will be showing work in an exhibition at the Rochester Contemporary Art Gallery in Rochester, NY. The exhibition, Land Tracking Land, investigates the environments in which we live, from our perception and relation to their utility to how we create amid them. The exhibiting artists approach this topic via constructing, reconstructing, or inventing buildings and land/city scapes as their interpretation of environment. The exhibition will run from October 20 - November 19. Ting Chang, Assistant Professor in Art History, was invited to participate among major scholars in the history of Chinese art and archaeology at the conference “Collecting ‘China’ Objects, Materiality and Multicultural Collectors," held by the University of Delaware and Winterthur Museum, September 28-29. Suzie Silver and Kim Beck were featured artist-presenters as part of the Symposium on Light, held October 7. Sponsored in collaboration among the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts with the Pittsburgh Glass Center and Pittsburgh Filmmakers, this symposium gathered area artists and curators to discuss the importance, meaning, and use of light in the visual arts. Lowry Burgess' video of the zero-gravity flight of the "Seed of the Infinite Absolute" was shown at the opening of the new Roundhouse in London in the exhibition Space-Soon. Later this month, the International Museum of Photography in Paris will exhibit his short-wave radio holograms entitled "Moon-Bounce" in the exhibition Corp Elecromatique as part of its Outsiders Festival. He continues to meet in Washington and Paris on his proposals to UNESCO and the World Bank for the protection of abandoned and endangered cultural/historical sites worldwide: one of the seven provisions of the "Toronto Manifesto, the Right to Human Memory" of March 2001. Elaine A. King, along with co-editor Gail Levin of CUNY, had the anthology "Ethics and the Visual Arts," published in September by Allworth Press in New York. This volume, comprised of 19 essays, explores a diverse range of topics about ethics in the visual arts. It examines and showcases the unethical practices of such institutions as the J.P. Getty, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, as well as Native American artifacts and the Holocaust. This book is available on Amazon.com. James Duesing will give a public presentation of his work and meet with graduate students at the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus on October 11 and 12. |

He will present a Solo Show at Slippery Rock University from October 30 - November 2. Patricia Colvin Burson (BFA '71) has been honored with an artist residency fellowship in New Delhi, India from November 3 - January 31, 2007, culminating in a solo exhibit there. She is currently represented in galleries in Boston, Martha's Vineyard, and New Hampshire. Joel David Abramson (BFA '78) is currently working with the Midwest Special Services running an art program and using adaptive computer technology hardware to enhance the lives of young adults with developmental and physical disabilties. Kathy Skerritt (Mead) (BFA '80) presents a solo exhibit, Transcendental Topographies, at the Beachwood Arts Council's new gallery space in Beachwood, Ohio. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 21, 5-9pm and an artist's demonstration on October 22 at 2pm. The show is on view from October 22 - November 4. In 2004 Skerritt was invited to participate as one of only 20 artists from around the world to be featured in the extraordinary International Portfolio Project being developed by the Colours of Freedom Foundation of Toronto, Canada. http://www.kathyskerritt.com. Deborah Hosking (BFA '81) will be presenting her work in digital photography at the 96th Associated Artists Annual exhibition, to be held at the Carnegie Museum of Art , from October 26 - January 15. Boris Bally (BFA '84) has had his work recently collected by Jerry Seinfeld, the Kendall School of Art, Racine Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery's Furniture Collection, and the Museum of Art + Design and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, both in New York City. He has also worked on commissions for Cranium, Inc., Enterprise-Rent-a-Car and Jay Leno. His work is currently on view in exhibitions at the Cooper Hewitt in NYC and the Lancaster Museum of Art in PA. John Currin (BFA ’84) is included in an exhibit
inspired by the heroines of The Metropolitan Opera’s six new productions.
Curated by Dodie Kazanjian (The Met’s new contemporary art advisor),
the exhibit this fall is part of the Met's effort to to reconnect itself
to the contemporary visual arts world. It is creating a new gallery space
in its lobby to display works of art by major artists connected to the
repertory of the company’s 2006-07 season. David French (BFA '87) exhibited his paintings and sculpture over the past year at Monmouth Muesum, Lincroft, NJ, and has had featured solo exhibits at Beaureguard Gallery in Rumson, NJ; Montage Gallery in Baltimore, MD; and Bob McKay Imaging in Red Bank, NJ. His work can also be seen at Concept Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA. Dan Kaplan (BFA '87) teaches art at an elementary school and resides in Willimantic, CT and contiues to make art and music. Matt Wrbican (BFA '81 and MFA '89) is organizing a small show about wiretapping in the Archives of the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh entitled, Buggin': Taps for Justice. James Thurman (BFA '93) has been elected to the Board of Directors of the national metalsmithing organization, SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths). He has also had 3 pieces and an essay included in new book from Lark Publishing, 500 Necklaces, as well the essay "Integration of Teaching and Research through Digital Fabrication Projects in the Curriculum" in the Council on Undergraduate Research's "Designing, Implementing, and Sustaining a Research-Supportive Undergraduate Curriculum: A Compendium of Successful Curricular Practices from Faculty and Institutions Engaged in Undergraduate Research." Currently his Solo exhibition, Turning Out: Sculptural Revelations through printed media, is on view at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg, PA, from September 9 - November 10. He will also be the Visiting Artist at the University of North Texas, October 12 -15, lecturing on "Genre Hybridity: What is it and why should we care?" and will offer technical demonstrations of lathe-based metalspinning. He has also been invited to be a Guest Lecturer at the Velvet da Vinci gallery in San Francisco, CA, on November 4. Melissa Thorne (BFA '93) participates in Fair Exchange, a group show at Millard Sheets Gallery at the L.A. County Fair, September 8 through October 1. Germany. MISSION A is a series of video projections that allow

Wilson (BFA '05) will be speaking at the next Society for Photographic Education National Conference in Miami. She will be part of an Academic Practicum Workshop panel presentation and discussion, titled Inspiring Youth Through Photography. She will discuss her experiences as a photography instructor, and as the current Student Services Coordinator for the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, as well as the educational techniques used within the unique program at MCG. Sarah Laina Koljonen (BFA '06) has posted work completed
this summer at Chautauqua School of Art. She will begin a residency this
November at Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
