FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES

Elaine A. King, Professor of Art History and Theory, presented a paper titled Black and White: Two Distinct Stories: Nicholas Nixon & Carrie Mae Weems, at the 18th Annual National Conference on Liberal Arts and the Education of Artists at the School of Visual Arts in NYC on October 22. She also chaired a conference session, The Art Story. King has been invited to chair the plenary session for the next conference that will focus on American Art, Artists and Global Education.

Melissa Ragona, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, presented in the Film, History, and Consciousness: Hollis Frampton as Filmmaker panel at the GLORIA! The Legacy of Hollis Frampton Conference at Princeton University, November 5 and 6.

Hilary Harp, Melissa Ragona and Suzie Silver are exhibiting in Media-Frames: Video, Installation, Electronic Media, a group exhibit at Foster Gallery, University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire, November 4 - 24. Silver and Harp spoke about their work there on November 11.

Suzie Silver and Hilary Harp screened The Happiest Day, their collaborative video in PLAY III - International Video Art Festival this October at the Museo de Arte Ángel M. De Rosa in Junìn, Buenos Aires, Argentina and in Cyberdeco: A Screening Adventure at Piccadilly Cinema Complex, Perth Australia. This November it will screen in Angle: The First International Short Film and Video Festival in Xiamen, China. It is being screened through January 23 in American Scam at the Laboratorio Arte Alameda in downtown Mexico City.

Golan Levin, Assistant Professor of Art, is exhibiting in group exhibitions: Microwave International Media Art Festival at City Hall, Hong Kong and the 2nd International ACTS Festival, Conde Duque Cultural Centre, Madrid, Spain. This November, he is also presenting The Manual Input Sessions and Scribble (Duo) at the RomaEuropa Festival in Rome, Italy.

Jeremy Boyle, Concept Studio instructor in the School of Art, has a solo exhibit at Hudson Franklin, 100 Hudson Street, #8E in New York City, November 6 - January 8, 2005. http://www.HudsonFranklin.com.

Pamela Jennings, Assistant Professor of Art and Human Computer Interaction, is exhibiting Solitaire: Dream Journals, a CD ROM constructed narratives software environment in Creating Their Own Image: A History of African-American Women Artists, curated by Dr. Lisa E. Bruce Erikson, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, presents a solo exhibit, Unravel, at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, November 9 - December 1, 2004.

Elizabeth Castonguay, Pre-College Art Instructor, presents a solo exhibit, A Portrait of Us, at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, November 19 - December 23, with an opening reception on November 19, 5:30-8pm. She will speak about her work on December 3 from 6-7pm followed by another reception until 8pm. On November 30 and December 7, she will conduct figure drawing workshops with all proceeds benefiting the PCA.

Bob Bingham, Associate Professor of Art, has an Ecoart exhibit at New House, Carnegie Mellon University. On view are a variety of past artworks in the form of documentation and/or proposals. Bob is also participating in an exhibit in Baroda, Gujarat, India, November 16, curated by Takahiro Noguchi (MFA '03).

ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

ROY (BFA '84) is participating in a traveling exhibition, EDUCATORS/EDUCATED:Jewelry and Metals in Ohio, curated by Gail M. Brown, opening at the Ohio Art Council’s Riffe Gallery, Columbus, OH, November18 - January 3, 2005; it will travel through Ohio to the Butler Institute of American Art in Salem, February 19-May 29, and to The Cleveland Institute of Art, June 24-July 25.

Boris Bally (BFA '84) has been commissioned by The Big Job: Comedy Central NY (now a part of MTV) to make holiday gifts for their staff. Yes, his shop is maxing out on 1000+ coaster sets! Daniel Mark Duffy (BFA '87) Upon graduation, Duffy accepted an illustrators’ position at the American Museum of Natural History in the Department of Vertabrate Paleontology. In the late 80's, he collaborated on a number of commercial illustration projects including award-winning children's books. Throughout the 90's Daniel’s reputation and portrait experience attracted the attention of a number of American universities, notably New York University and Yale Law School. Daniel Mark Duffy continues to teach and exhibit his work throughout North America and the British Isles and welcomes subjects and students to his NYC and Connecticut studios by appointment. http://www.danielmarkduffy.com/.

Laura Sharp Wilson (BFA '87) was included in Volume 53 of New American Paintings, the Midwest Edition. Her work was also included in an article on decoding abstraction in the Septmber edition of Art and Antiques magazine. Wilson will be part of the Team LUMP exhibition Goodbye Says It All at The Contemporary in Atlanta opening November 13.

Mia Brownell (BFA '93) held an open studio during the November 13-14 grand opening of the Media Loft (Westchester's only Artists in Residence space), New Rochelle, NY. She also has new paintings in Breathing Space at Metaphor Contemporary Art, 382 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, NY , with an opening reception on Wednesday, November 17, 6-9pm. http://www.metaphorcontemporaryart.com/.

Denise Delgado (BHA '98) is Artistic Director of First Person Projects, a Miami arts/education firm that produces projects involving artists, community organizations, schools, and other entities. She has been the New Media Project Coordinator for the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach and a columnist for the Miami Art Exchange. Currently, she is working toward her masters degree in new media.

Richard Pell (BFA '99) and former STUDIO for Creative Inquiry Associate, screened his documentary on legendary Pittsburgh street protestor, Bob Lansberry, at the 3 Rivers Film Festival in Pittsburgh, November 10 and 11, 2004.

Marinda Stretavsky (BFA '00) is a featured artist showing dolls at Gallerie Chiz's opening and receptions on November 5 and December 3. There are 21 artists involved in this holiday show.

Jill Palermo's (BFA '02) work is on view at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts' Emerging Artists exhibits, November 18 - December 24, 2004. She also participated in the Agnon Art Show in Beachwood, OH, November 6-7. www.jillpalermo.com.

Laura Nelson (BFA '02) showed multiple works last month in Nightmare on 18th Street, at the 18th Street Arts Complex, Santa Monica, CA. The multi-media show, curated by The Pandemonium Collective, opened in October and also featured installations and live performances.

Sara Stanek and Noel Hefele (both BFA '02) are exhibiting together in Halftone Snake Release at Modern Formations, 4919 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, November 5 - 26.http://www.modernformations.com.

Jennifer Mi Rae Chung (BFA '03) is working for G Techts, a New York City architecture firm exploring relationships between electronic information technologies and the built environment. Since graduation, she has also worked as an art director for numerous short films and a recent feature film, Danger Island, a directorial debut for John Bruce (art director of I Shot Andy Warhol and Happiness.)

Mark Baugh-Sasaki (BFA '04) exhibited September 1 through October 1 at North Beach Gallery in San Francisco, CA. A special artist reception for him was held on November 3 as the gallery celebrated its 3rd anniversary. http://www.northbeachgallery.com/artist.asp?artist=baughsasaki.

GRADUATE ACTIVITIES

Daydream Nation (through the perilous night) runs through January 1, 2005 at the Three Rivers Arts Festival Gallery on the second floor of 937 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh. The exhibit includes installations by Paper Rad (with Jacob Ciocci, third year graduate student) and Terry Young (BFA '01). Other works are also included by alumni and students: Peter Burr, Elizabeth Deasy, Fereshteh Toosi, and Mary (Mack) Tremonte. A closing reception will be held Friday, December 31 from 6pm-12am during First Night Pittsburgh.
