FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES

Ting Chang, Assistant Professor, Critical Arts Histories, presented a paper entitled "'China Through a Peephole’: Travel Writing and an Early Form of Home Entertainment,” at the Midwestern Modern Languages Association conference (M/MLA) in Cleveland, OH, on November 8. The session was called “Early Visual Media and European Literature,” chaired by Vance Byrd, University of Pennsylvania.

Melissa Ragona was invited to speak at an international conference of scholars, artists, and filmmakers addressing the resurgence of horror in contemporary art at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy in Ludwigsburg, Germany. "The Art of Horror" will address topics such as the renaissance of the horror genre in art, literature, theatre and film. Various interdisciplinary and international points of view, scientific analysis, and aesthetic practice will be combined in lectures, panel discussions and workshops. The conference ran from November 8-10. Ragona's lead catalogue essay, "The Violence of Theory: Christian Jankowski's Horror Trilogy," which discusses Jankowski's recent exhibitions at The Kitchen in New York and Lisson Gallery in London will come out this month in The Frankenstein Set, published by JRP Ringier press in Berlin, Zürich, Dijon, and New York. Her essay on the films and paintings of Warhol superstar, Marie Menken: "Swing and Sway: Marie Menken's Filmic Events," just came out in the book, Women's Experimental Cinema: Critical Frameworks (Duke University Press, 2007),

Elaine A. King presented a paper titled, "A Reunion of the Spiritual in Art," at the School of the Visual Arts Conference, "Art, Religion and The Spiritual," on October 18 in New York City. She also chaired the session "Crisis and Art." On October 20, King delivered the paper " Technology: Ethics and Societal Accountability, Then and Now [Roots in Martin Heidegger]" at the Society for the History of Technology in Washington, DC. The theme of the conference was "SHOT@50: Looking Back, Looking Beyond."

Andrew Johnson's video, "The Annunciation II: VICTEORY (sic)" was presented in Optica: the Gijon International Festival of Video Art, November 16-18 in Asturias, Spain,

Golan Levin will have a solo exhibition at Bitforms Gallery, NYC, opening on November 30 running through mid-January, 2008. Works by Levin also appear in Interactive Design Art and Technology, and at the Singapore Science Centre, Singapore from November 9 - January 1, 2008. In early December, Levin will give public lecture presentations at "The Entertainment Gathering," at the Getty Center, Los Angeles on December 3, and in the MIT Media Laboratory Colloquium Series, Cambridge, MA, on December 10. In related news, School of Art classwork by Damien Lopez, a junior Chemistry major, has been selected for inclusion in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. On October 15, Suzie Silver and Hilary Harp presented the Robotic Robot section of their live audio-visual vaudeville show, AV Lodge, at the Round the Coyote Festival in Chicago, IL. The completed, full length, AV Lodge will have its world premiere in July 2008 as part of the Pittsburgh Biennial, PA. Recent screenings of the short version of our video "Nebula" include: 8th Seoul International Film Festival, Korea (September 2007); Impure Cinema: Hybrid Works Rupturing Media Boundaries, Studio 27, San Francisco (October 2007); and the Three Rivers Film Festival, Pittsburgh, PA (November 2007). "Nebula" has also recently been selected for distribution by the Video Data Bank, Chicago, IL. In January 2008, work from their "Untitled Landscape" series will be included in the group show, Inside the Box: Contemporary Artists Working with Dioramas, at the Howard Yezerski Gallery, Boston, MA.

Katy Morgan (BFA '67) photogtaphs will be on view in Comma Gallery's Foto Fest 2007 through December 7, with a closing reception at 6:30 p.m. Florida’s Finest Art Photography is curated by Christopher Casler. The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) is a co-sponsor of the exhibition. Drawing on the work of fifteen of Florida’s acknowledged fine art photographers, Foto Fest 2007 will showcase the variety of subject and process of fine art photography. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m - 4:00 p.m. and is located at 813 Virginia Avenue, Orlando, FL, 32803. Ms. Morgan's works will also be opening in the exhibition Sculpture, Sand and Sepia at the Aquarian Gallery in Boca Raton, FL, on Saturday December 1. Her work Elements (recently shown in the prestigious All Florida 2007 in the Boca Raton Museum of Art) is included in the newly released publication of American Art Collector 2007, October 15. Many of these prominent photographers have shown their work in galleries and museums across the United States, and their work is in numerous corporate and private collections.

Diane Samuels (BFA¹70, MFA '76) was named Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania at an awards ceremony at Governor Rendel's Harrisburg residence. Her permanent installation, "Luminous Manuscript," at the Center of Jewish History in NYC is included in Judith Dupre's book, "Monuments: America's History in Art and Memory," published by Random House.

Patricia Burson (BFA '71) presents Dunescapes, a solo exhibit at the Newton Free Library in Newton, MA, November 2 - 29.

Celia Reisman (BFA '71) is Assistant Professor of Studio Art at Swarthmore College, PA. She exhibited early this summer at The Painting Center in NYC. She is represented by Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia, PA, which presents her eighth solo exhibition October 31 - November 28. Marlena Novak (BFA '82) works in the collaborative, localStyle with Jay Alan Yim. They presented "Cite Unseen" in the Site Unseen Festival at the Chicago Cultural Center on November 13. localStyle's "Fluid Mechanics Remix" was presented in Ars Electronica's Overtures project this summer in Linz and "bOnk! Panorama" in the group Salon at Arti et Amicitiae, Amsterdam this fall. Jennifer Urso (BFA '96) createed the first of her outdoor site-specific series "Temporary Spaces" (creating tall melting ice columns containing carved rocks on vacant lots in Phoenix, AZ) for the group exhibit Superfluid at the Paradise Valley Community College, Paradise Valley, AZ that opened on November 9. She also screened her new video "Conversation Scribble Tangle" indoors. The show will remain up until early December. Ricardo Miranda Zúñiga's (MFA '99) "Carreta Nagua, Siglo 21" was commissioned for TRANSITIO_MX02, Festival of Video and New Media, Mexico City. In the colonial park, Alameda Central located in the historical center of Mexico City, Ricardo offers free rickshaw rides. Once the passengers settle into the rickshaw, they watch an animation that tells a tale of immigration, aging and cultural and familial loss. Documentation of the recent commission is now online,

Tom Smith (BFA '02) started the company SilverTree Media, (founded 2004) with his two brothers and sister in-law. SilverTree is primarily an Art meets Tech² company specializing in video games and special web applications. They are developing their own content, as well as a number of projects they collaborating on with Disney.

Abigail Satinsky (BFA '03) is a film and video curator for Around the Coyote, a non-profit organization that supports, promotes and makes accessible Chicago's multidisciplinary arts community. She completed graduate study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL, studying Art History and Art Administration and Policy. Before relocating to Chicago, she worked in Boston at the Harvard Film Archive, Art Interactive, and taught sculpture, video production and printmaking in an arts afterschool program. She is a Board member of Harold Jeffers Memorial Residency Program and is one of the founding members of InCUBATE, a research institute and residency program dedicated to challenging current infrastructures for arts production.

Cassandra Jones' (MFA '04) work was included in a group exhibition @ IEEE Infovis Conference on Information Visualization, curated by Golan Levin from October 28 - November 1. Her work was also included this month in the CHROMA Festival de Arte Audivisual in conjunction with the University of Guadalajara and the National Council for Culture and Arts (CONACULTA) in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
