FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES

Herb Olds, Professor Emeritus, has a solo exhibit at Palomar College's Boehm Gallery in San Marcos, CA, April 4-26.

Elaine A. King was a faculty-critic-in residence at the Escuela De Artes Plasticas in San Juan, Puerto
Rico March 16-21. During this visit she gave a lecture titled After After Post. Where Do We Go From Here? In addition she critiqued senior projects, as well as worked with the faculty on curriculum revision.

Pamela Jennings will participate this April in Nomadic Transitions: Thinking about Art in Zurich, Switzerland. The event is sponsored by the Hochschule fur Gestaltung und Kunst (HGKZ) - in collaboration with the CAiiA-Star program in the UK. http://www.nomadic-transitions.ch/ She is also participating in the symposium for the 10th annual New York Digital Salon in New York City, sponsored by the School of Visual Arts and Leonardo Journal at the MoMA Film at the Gramercy Theater. http://www.nydigitalsalon.com/salon_10/index.php

ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

Mel Bochner (BFA'62) has a solo exhibit, Mel Bochner Photographs 1966-69 at Sonnabend Gallery in New York City, accompanied by a catalogue published by Yale.

Jonathan Borofsky (BFA '64) is featured in an interview with Mark Rosenthal in the April issue of Artforum.

Joel Feldman (BFA '65) is Professor of Printmaking and Director of the Visiting Artist Series at University of Southern Illinois in Carbondale. His large scale woodcuts have won national recognition and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Illinois Arts Council.

Michael Smithhammer (BFA '81) is participating at Guldagergard this summer, the international ceramic research center of the Museum of International Ceramic Art in Denmark. He is also attending the Oslo International Ceramics Symposium in Oslo, Norway, June 20-23.

ROY (BFA '84) had two fabricated silver and brass, hinged bracelet sculptures from her 9/11 series in Comic Release: Negotiating Identity for a New Generation. The pieces were entitled, Godzilla with Fez and 93rd Floor. The exhibition (with book) travels April 12- June 15, 2003. ROY also participated in a national competition juried by DiAnne Love, Rachel Osajima and Donna Briskin. Two fabricated silver and hinged bracelets entitled Level Red and River Landscape with Fireflies will be exhibited in bigLITTLE: Jewelers and Sculptors Making it in Metal at the Craft Cultural Arts Gallery, Oakland, CA. The exhibition runs May 15 - June 27, 2003 with opening receptions May 15 and May 22. For information: dlove@oaklandnet.com.

Laura Sharp Wilson (BFA '87) will be included in two European exhibitions this summer, Violent Violence at Gallery Art et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Bad Touch at Keith Talent Gallery in London. Wilson's work was also selected for New American Talent at The Jones Center for Contemporary Art in Austin, Texas. This exhibition will tour venues in Texas from Fall 2003 through Summer 2005.

Castenada/Reiman (BFA '92) are exhibiting Floor Plan/New Work, an installation at Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco. http://www.wirtzgallery.com

Arden Bendler Browning (BFA '97) is presenting her MFA thesis exhibit April 23-26 at Temple Gallery, Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. http://www.ardenbendlerbrowning.com

Peter Coffin (MFA '00) is exhibiting in the group show Karaoke Death Machine (based on the concept by Albert Tien). The exhibit opened at Daniel Reich Gallery on Wednesday, April 9.

Semi Ryu (MFA '02) and Evan Tapper (MFA '01) participated in The University of Southern California's School of Fine Arts Fourth Annual International Festival of Time-based Media AIM IV: Interference Patterns at the Helen Lindhurst Fine Arts Gallery, Watt Hall, USC Campus, April 7-11.

Jake Feige (BFA '02) will attend graduate school at Cranbrook this fall.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Mark Baugh-Sasaki (BFA '04) and Patrick Donnelly (BSA '05) are exhibiting in a unique new gallery space for artistic technology and technological art sponsored by the Computer Science Department. Located in the Planetary Robotics Building (old garage) between Newell-Simon Hall and Wean 1st floor, the exhibit opens Friday, April 11, 7-11pm.Contact: tech-gallery@cs

Senior, Merritt Johnson was accepted for graduate study at Massachusetts College of Arts in Boston.

Fifth year scholar Bill Kofmehl was accepted for graduate study at Yale School of Art.

GRADUATE STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Mark Dixon and Think Tank, a local collective of artists, performed The Kitchen Renovation Dinner Theater, in which they broke down an entire Garfield kitchen into puppets, props, sets and instruments. Versions of the performance occurred at three Pittsburgh venues: March 15 at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum and at Project 1877, Millvale; and March 16 at the Mattress Factory. The project was covered in Piece Meal by Sharmila Venkatasubban in Pittsburgh City Paper.

Adam Davies and Mario Marzan, first year graduate students in art, are exhibiting with senior, Elizabeth Deasy, and alumnus, Jake Feige (BFA '02) in Information Man at Future Tenant in Pittsburgh, April 1-12, 2003.

Ruth Stanford, second year graduate student, organized Contemporary Art Celebrating Life in Allegheny Cemetery with support from the Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association. The exhibit includes works by faculty members Jon Beckley, Mary Hood, Elaine A. King, Carol Kumata, Joseph Mannino, and Irina Nakhova as well as staff and students, Terry Hritz, Naomi Falk, Merritt Johnson and William Earl Kofmehl III. The exhibit opens April 11, 4:30-6:30pm at 4734 Butler Street, with a reception following at Future Tenant, 801 Liberty Avenue, 6-9pm. Viewers may visit the exhibit through April 25, daily until 7pm.
