FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES

Elaine A. King presented the paper "Museums of the Future-Shifts in a Global Society," at the 2007 National Popular Culture/American Culture Conference in Boston, MA, on April 5. King also chaired the session titled "Museums and Other Sites of Visual Culture".

Ting Chang presented her research at the English Department Colloquium on Friday, May 4, with her paper entitled, "Edmond de Goncourt’s ‘China’ Cabinet – a Fantasy". She will also be giving a conference paper in Paris in early June entitled ‘Le Musée Guimet et le culte de Paris,” in the 3e Congrès international de la Société des études romantiques et dix-neuvièmistes (SERD), June 7-9.

Pamela Jennings exhibition, Speculative Data and the Creative Imaginary: shared innovative visions between Art and Technology, has been featured in the Spring issue of the National Academy of Sciences magazine, "Issues in Science and Technology," vol. 23(3). The exhibition will be at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C. throughout the summer 2007. Jennings presented two position papers in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computer Human Interaction (CHI) conference. The first paper "Engagement in the Public Sphere using Tangible Social Interfaces" was presented in the "Shared Encounters" workshop led by members of the MediaCity project at the Bauhaus University. The second paper, "Interdisciplinary Methods for the Design of Tangible Social Interfaces," was presented in the "Tangible User Interface in Context and Theory" workshop led by Hirosi Ishii and other researchers from his Tangible Bits MIT Media Lab group. Jennings also presented a paper at the Planetary Collegium symposium "Reviewing the Future" in Montreal, Canada.

Tessa Windt’s work is included in A Slipping Glimpse at La Vie in Pittsburgh, PA from April 14 – May 24 and in Woman Traveller Returns at the Pomerene Center for the Arts in Coshocton, OH, from May 5 – June 10. An article on Windt’s work entitled "Covering Absence" written by Jacqueline Ruyak, is included in the Spring issue of Surface Design Journal.

Golan Levin's "Dumpster" project, commissioned by the Whitney Artport and the Tate Museum Online, has been recognized with the 2007 Webby Award for Net Art. Mary Weidner’s painting, “The Last Birthday,” is on view in the exhibition 30 YEARS/30 CAKES at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, in Grand Rapids, MI, which will run from April 26 - December 26.

ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

Phillip Pearlstein (A '49) was honored at the beginning of May with a 2007 History Makers Award in Arts and Letters from the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center. Pearlstein also has a show of his work at the Michael Berger Gallery in Pittsburgh from April 20 - June 30.

Andy Warhol's (A '49) work is included in A View to a Kill, a group show at Max Lang in NYC through June 1. Anne Richter's (BFA '62) exhibit of 16 paintings on paper at the Miwa/Alex Gallery, NYC, is currently on view through May 26. Included in the show are her "Bamboozle Series", a response to the web of lies surrounding the war in Iraq.

Claire Rosenfeld (BFA '64) will be exhibiting work in Contemporary Figurations, a survey of New York Artists, at Westbeth Gallery, NYC, May 19 - June 12.

Susan Schwalb (BFA '65) will exhibit in the group show, Contemporary Metalpoint Drawing, at the Art Students League, NYC, from May 28 - July 6.

Katherine "Katy" Morgan (CFA '67), in addition to permanent representation at the Aquarian Age Gallery, received an Honorable Mention in the juried competition Spring Exhibition for her work, "Locked Out" from the Women in the Visual Arts of Boca Raton, FL; received First Place with "ELEMENTS" in the Broken Sound Art Exhibition, judged by the Executive Direct of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, George Bolge; is included in an exhibition at the Sugar Sand Community Center through June 9; and will be appearing in the Images Gallery with the Boca Raton Museum of Art Guild in which she has been juried in as a Signature Member, with an opening reception on May 16; and she will be is showing works at NEOCON in Chicago, IL, June 11-13 and is a spotlighted artist for May on the ART-EXCHANGE site, Art-Exchang. Her food photography is a permanent fixture in the Boca Raton Club News for food photography. Dale Huffman (B.S. Physics '72) is head of the art department at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, PA. Ron Desmett (MFA '79) and Kathleen Mulchay present CONVERGENT ACTS, a collaborative exhibition with EDGE studios that examines the design of the New Hazlett Theater in Pittsburgh, PA. Photographs, drawings, and diagrams of the design process will be displayed alongside parallel text of interviews with the client team, presenting from start to finish the collabortaive methods of designers and institutions to create a space for theatrical performance and community gathering. Taryn FitzGerald (BFA '84) is a featured artist in Voyeur - an online video collective that recently launched its collection of national and international video artists as part of an exhibiton at 69 Smith Street Gallery, Fitzroy, Australia. Boris Bally (BFA '84) exhibits in GlassWear, a showcase of 60 internationally renowned jewelry artists at the Museum of Arts & Design in NYC, May 17 - September 2. David French (BFA '87) currently has a Solo exhibit, Dialectical Matters, of painting and sculpture at Montage Gallery, Baltimore, MD, through May 27. He has also been excepted to The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts "Sculptoure", a six month urban sculpture park on the beach in Long Branch, NJ, to install a 1500 lbs. steel sculpture. The exhibit runs from May 5 - October 30.

Laura Sharp Wilson (BFA '87) with Elin O'Hara Slavick, (artist, activist and Professor of Art, UNC, Chapel Hill) have organized The Heroes Show, a traveling exhibit of works on paper currently on display at Bryces's Barber Shop and room 30 in Olympia, WA, from May 5 - June 2. 49 artists from across the United States, France, and British Columbia were invited to contribute a piece on the subject of heroes. CMU alum/faculty who have contributed work are David French, Susanne Slavick, Andrew Johnson, and Amie Robinson.

Hope Hanes (BFA '92), currently the Artistic Director at Round Hill Atrs Center, will be extibiting work this month in Art at the Mill at the historic Burwell-Morgan Mill in Millwood, VA. Julie Vinette's (BFA '93) encaustic and oil painting, "Hills Like White Elephants," will be included in the First National Encaustic Painting Conference Exhibit at Montserrat College in Beverly, MA. Paul L. Snelson II (BFA '96) exhibited an installation that included a series of nine small monumental ceramic maquettes entitled Les Anges Étranges in a group show at the North Lake College Gallery in Irving, TX, April 12 - May 4.

Jennifer Urso (BFA '96) will display a video of her February performance as well as the installation portion of her piece "Rebuilding the City" on Wednesday, May 9, at the Contemporary Forum 2006 Artist Grant winners exhibit opening at the Phoenix Art Museum, AZ. On Friday, May 11 southwestNET: drawing outside the lines will open at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and run through September 16. D. Fox Harrell (BFA and BS '98) recently completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego. Matt Keegan (BFA '98) is an "emerging artist" nominator for the inaugural biennial Altoids Award. Four winners will be selected by "established artists" and will receive $25,000 and exhibit at New York's Museum of Contemporary Art in fall of 2008,

Cat Mazza and Richard Pell (both BFA '99), have been awarded Media Arts Fellowships for 2007, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. The foundation awarded nearly $750,000 to 22 innovative and pioneering filmmakers and media artists. Funded projects include Mazza's Knitoscope Sampler, an installation that will use custom software to translate digital video feeds into the appearance of knitted stitches. Handmade designs will be collected and scanned into a computer to create a database of patterns from which the video will be 'stiched'. The resulting animation series will narrate stories about the labor movement, drawn from interviews with activists, historians and textile workers. Richard Pell's Institute for transgeneography was also funded. It's primary objective is to create the world's first comprehensive map of engineered transgenic flora and fauna. The project will consist of a database of transgenic organisms and the web interface that will make the information available to the public at large,

Adam Grossi (BFA '03) has been named the 2007 Emerging Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, granting him a solo show at the PCA, opening September 7. Cheryl Casteen (MFA '06, class of 2000) will have a solo exhibit of photos and photo lightboxes with sound components at the Arts Center of Saint Peter, MN. Social Fabric: Photo Installation will open on May 24 with a reception on May 26 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and run through July 8. Ian Ingram (MFA '07) has been awarded a 9-week summer artist residency and fellowship at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, ME. This invitation follows a lengthy and exceptionally competitive review of over 1,685 applicants, http://www.skowheganart.org/.

Lauren Adams (MFA '07) has won a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Program Award of $15,000. This is the second award in three years granted to a student in the School of Art's MFA Program.

Ben Kinsley (MFA '08) and Takehito Etani (MFA '06) will participate in Vision Request, an exhibition and collaborative performance hosted by Andrea Zittel and organized by Jennifer Dudley, Sarrita Hunn, and Ben Kinsley. The School of Art BFA SENIOR SHOW: TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE will open on Friday, May 11, with a reception from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery. Free and open to the public, this year's exhibition contains a wide variety of work from 32 graduating students including drawing, painting, sculpture, video, projections, performance and multi-media work. (omfg) Lisa Michelle Frances Considine (BFA '09) presents a solo exhibition, iron city: lusting for love and finding rust, "a show of mixed media paintings by young SWF looking for tall SM to enjoy dinner parties, intelligent conversation, and romance. Lusting for love and finding rust? Its not you, its them." Currently the 2007 recipient of ASH Gallery's "Fresh Juice" Emerging Artist Residency, Considine's exhibit will be displayed at ASH Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA, with an opening reception on May 10 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. This summer she will also be teaching art classes at ChART Art Studio School, a private studio in Houstn, TX.
