FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES

The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery presents Glassnost, glassworks by Patricia Bellan-Gillen, Hilary Harp & Suzie Silver, Andrew Johnson, Carol Kumata, Martin Prekop, Ron Desmett (MFA '79) and Kathleen Mulcahy, co-founder of the Pittsburgh Glass Center. An opening reception will be held on June 8 from 5:00-10:00 p.m. with the exhibition on view through July 31. Paul Krainak, essayist for the exhibit's catalogue explains: "The title 'Glassnost' is a lighthearted reference to the term for a new cultural openness that was used by Mikhail Gorbachov prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union. Here the term is applied in a punning way to the emergence of materials and process of traditional craft in the broader culture as well as the world of progressive artists. These artists utilize glass in a multi-directional language with sensibilities that include profound insights with regard to utility, ornamentation, politics, and formal style," http://millergallery.cfa.cmu.edu/~miller/exhibitions/.

Barbara Stork (BFA '82), working on behalf of Atta, Inc.(NYC) in 2006 with co-workers/sculptors Lauren Lev and Ted Stanke (MFA U. of Delaware), developed a method to cast the interior surface of the USS Monitor Turret for the Mariner's Museum, Newport News, VA. The interior surface, made from wrought iron, had been weakened by saltwater, unlike the rest of the Turret, made from cast iron, which will survive conservation. Why a group of sculptors and not trained marine metal conservators? The massive scale of moldmaking has never been attempted by conservators. The finished castings will be stored as a permanent physical record of the interior, most important will be the shape of the distortions made by cannonballs that hit the outside.
