Elaine A. King wrote the exhibition catalogue essay "Traces in a Kaleidoscopic Time," BIS Altes Museum, Monchengladbach, Germany.

Lowry Burgess has been appointed as an advisor to the new Annenberg Media World art project with PBS New York, Channel 13. The project will be a 21 part series on art.

Andrew Johnson participates in PIXILERATIONS [v.4]: Stories ± Ornament at the Sol Koffler Gallery, Center for Integrative Technology, Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, September 28 - October 14. His video, "The Annunciation II: VICTEORY (sic)" will be included in EXiS: Experimental Film & Video Festival in Seoul, South Korea, August 24-30 and in Raw Tactics of the Subversive Body, a traveling video collection screening at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, PA, on September 8 and at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY, on September 29, http://www.rootingfortheradical.com.

Kartoon Kings' first monograph and comprehensive analysis of the graphic artwork of Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com. Interactive artworks by Golan Levin appear in Experimenta, the Australian International Biennial of Media Art, in Melbourne from August 25 - September 23; in Selections from the ComputerFineArts Collection at the Haifa Museum of Art, Israel, from September through October; in the Picture House exhibition at Belsay Hall Castle, Newcastle, through October 18; and in Source Code, Eyebeam's 10th Anniversary Exhibition, through August 10.

ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

Janet Culbertson (A '53) was the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner award grant this month.

Arthur B. Ostroff's (A '56) oil pastel, "Nocturne, Philadelphia", was named Best in Show at the 2007 Scenes of the Schuylkill exhibition sponsored by the Schuylkill River Development Authority. In addition to a cash award, the work will be featured in the Authority's new calendar and expo announcement, as well as a solo show next year.

Susan Schwalb (A '65) exhibited her work in Chance and Necessity: Selections from the Kentler Flatfiles at Kentler International Drawing Space, Red Hook, Brooklyn, in July. The show was curated by Isabelle Dervaux, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Drawing, Morgan Library.

Joni Scully (BFA '71) of New York City has two large paintings in an exhibit entitled American Town and Country: A Collection of City and Landscape Paintings. James Adams (BFA '83), was included in the Pennsylvania Academy's Alumni Invitational Exhibition in July and in the St. Louis Painters Invitational at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, MO, on view through September 16, 2007. Adams' "Jeanie w/a fur cup" was exhibited by Jack the Pelican Presents Gallery, NYC, at Scope Hamptons July 26-29). His work will also be included in "Fragonard, Regards croisés", a book to be published 10/07 in France by Editions Mengès, co-authored by Dimitri Salmon (Département des Peintures, Musée du Louvre) and Jean-Pierre Cuzin.

Boris Bally (BFA '84) has been invited by Wustum Museum in Racine, WI, to hold a workshop 'Lost, Found & Redefined' from August 17-19, which will include a public lecture. He will be participating in Seattle's Facere Gallery show, Amuse, Amaze, Amend, on view August 8-25. He is also included this month in the group show Architecture & Structure in Contemporary Craft featuring new works by several artists, on view August 10 – October 28, at the Society of Arts and Crafts, Boston, MA. An opening reception will be held Friday, September 7, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Finally, In Fall 2007, the international exhibition curated via the Museum of Art & Design, NYC, and Pforzheim Jewelry Academie Glasswear, opens at the Toledo Museum of Art, OH, and travels until Jan 31, 2008. Robert Levine (BFA '84) exhibits in Fleeing the Scene at Happy Lion Gallery in Los Angeles through August 11. He has also shown work at Los Angeles galleries such as Roberts & Tilton and Tom Solomon's Garage. David French (BFA '87) currently is exhibiting sculpture in The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts Sculptoure, a six month urban sculpture park along the beach in Long Branch, NJ. The exhibit runs through October 2007. Also, he will be exhibiting painting and sculpture in Two Men in Visual Dialogue, at Mckay Imaging, NJ, as part of their third annual Breaking Away exhibit. Carin Mincemoyer (BFA '94) recently received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation as well as a 2007 Fellowship from the PA Council on the Arts. Currently she is an artist in residence at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture in Dawson City, Yukon, Canada, where she will open a solo show in late August.

D. Fox Harrell (B.F.A., B.S. '98) completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego in Spring 2007. He also accepted a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Digital Media in the School of Literature, Communication, and Culture at the Georgia Institute of Technology beginning in Fall 2007. At Georgia Tech he will start a lab/studio exploring the relationship between imaginative cognition, computation, and cultural production while developing new forms of computational narrative. He recently had a chapter published in "Second Person: Role-Playing and Story in Games and Playable Media" (MIT Press) and will have another chapter in the forthcoming "Critical Digital Studies: A Reader" (University of Toronto Press).

Seldon Yuan (BFA '98) has been invited to be a participating artist in the Seed Project, a benefit auction at Rare Gallery, 521 West 26th, NYC. A preview will be held on August 7 from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and live auction August 8 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The Seed Project is a global environmental art installation that uses the language of art to encourage people to improve the environment in creative ways. It began in March 2006 when artists and activists planted wheatgrass seeds creating individual art projects from what was grown. The Project is documented as an ever-expanding "Virtual Field" online and in the current issue of Artworld Digest. Seed Artists will also be included in a two month exhibition at the Winkleman Gallery project space opening September 13, 2007. The Seed Project is also working with Earth Pledge a New York City based environmental organization to bring the project to nearly 700 schools across the United States within the next year, http://www.artworldigest.com; http://www.seldonyuan.com.

Lynn Lu (BFA '99) exhibits her video "X" in the Singapore Art Show, August 2 - October 8. The video was featured in the July 20 International Herald Tribune. Fereshteh Toosi (MFA '04) exhibited"You're not as green as you are cabbage-looking" in E4: Station to Station, guest curated by Niels Van Tome at Transformer in Washington, DC, August 1-4, http://www.transformergallery.org/.

Blithe Riley (MFA '05) heads to Kucevo, Serbia for 2 weeks to participate in a residency/workshop with four other artists: Ava Bromberg, Dara Greenwald, Sarah Kanouse and Marisa Jahn. They group will attend workshops about economic issues in the region, giving talks at the American Embassy, and produce a public art project. The Project 'The Return of the Gastarbeiters', of which the first colloquia will be held this summer in Kucevo, will include 12 colloquia, 6 in Eastern Serbia and 6 in the host countries in Europe, on the subject of returning guest workers from Europe to Eastern Serbia and their influence on the local economy, politics, culture and environment. The project will incorporate a research phase by students of the anthropology and sociology department of the Philosophical faculty of Belgrade University. Each colloquium will consist of week long seminar that will include lecture on the history of the area and its current situation, on the subject of returning economical immigration and on engaged art and art in public space. The seminar will be followed by a two- week artist's workshop in which will participate 16 artists, 8 Serb and 8 international and which will end in a three week exhibition.
