FACULTY and STAFF ACTIVITIES

Kim Beck and Osman Khan worked collaboratively in the Emerging Artist Fellowship Program exhibition at Socrates Sculpture Park, NYC, where their project will be on view through March 1, 2009. Beck is starting the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation's Space Program in NYC, a highly competitive program awarded to less that 1% of applicants nationally. She and Cara Erkine also recently exhibited in and gave public lectures for 8-hour projects at Allegheny College, Meadville, PA, which featured 13 artists working in the Bowman and Penelec Galleries, with resulting work on view through September 30. http://www.socratessculpturepark.org

Patricia Bellan-Gillen presents two solo exhibitions, Zoo.Logic: Small Works on Birch and Paper at Heike Pickett Gallery, Versailles, KY, from October 10 - November 10, and Zoo.Logic, Large-scale Works at AWW Gallery, Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY along with an artist's lecture on October 10. Lowry Burgess will be featured in the Patrimony and Creation exhibition showing at CNES, the French government’s space agency. Opening September 20, Burgess’ “Lunar Antiphon” is an aspect of his work “Boundless Cubic Lunar Aperture,” the first work of art ever taken into space by a NASA shuttle. “Lunar Antiphon” has exhibited at Sandy Pond in Lincoln, MA, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts Museum in Philadelphia, PA, and the International Maison de Photographie in Paris. http://www.quaibranly.fr/en/programmation/jacques-kerchache-reading-room/index.html

Elaine A. King's review of Delanie Jenkins' exhibition is published in the October issue of "Sculpture" [Vol.27, No. 8]. In addition, Dr. King was selected to represent the USA at the 2008 Association of International Critics of Art's XLII Congress to be held in Barcelona Spain this coming November.

Golan Levin will deliver a keynote presentation, an installation and a performance at The New Media Meeting, in Norrköping, Sweden, on September 20; an artist's presentation at Flashpitt (the Pittsburgh Flash Conference), on October 10; and another keynote lecture at Interacção 2008 (3ª Conferência Interacção Pessoa-Máquina), at the Universidade de Évora, Portugal, on October 16. Levin's work also appears in several ongoing exhibitions, including Under Surveillance, at the Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI, through September 28; in Licht Kunst Werke at the Technorama Science Center, Winterthur, Switzerland through July 2009; at the Ars Electronica Center Museum of the Future, Linz, Austria through September 2009; and in YOUniverse, the 3rd Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla (BIACS3: Seville Biennale), from October 2 through January 11. Ayanah Moor has been invited to moderate a panel and write a blog in conjunction with Bi-Lingual, an exhibition at SPACES Gallery in Cleveland, OH. Her essay, "Identity Shows: Invisible Whiteness and Colored Display," can be found via link on the gallery website. Moor is also showing recent work in Perfect with Pixel, a group exhibition of digital print media at Bowling Green State University, OH, which opened September 9. Richard Pell will be exhibiting several different projects as a co-founding member of the radical engineering collective The Institute for Applied Autonomy: "Seized" (Institute for Applied Autonomy in collaboration with Critical Art Ensemble) will be on view as part of Democracy in America between Creative Time and Park Avenue Armory on view September 21-27; "Terminal Air" and the "Robotic GraffitiWriter" (Institute for Applied Autonomy) in the Taipei Biennial 2008 Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan, through January 4, 2009; "Terminal Air" (Institute for Applied Autonomy) in Networks of War at D21 Art Space in Leipzig, Germany through September 28; "TXTmob" (Institute for Applied Autonomy) in Signs of Change at Exit Art, NYC, through November 22. Additionally Richard will be exhibiting a new project with the Center for PostNatural History (CPNH) entitled Genetic Copy Prevention. Additional exhibits by the CPNH will take place later in the season at the Schenectady Museum of Science and Technology and Exit Art, NYC, with a permanent facility opening in the Pittsburgh, PA area by Fall 2009. "Genetic Copy Prevention" (Center for PostNatural History) will be featured in Copy Wrong at the Hannah Maclure Centre Dundee, Scotland, October 10 - January 1, 2009. Susanne Slavick was named 2008 Artist of the Year by Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Her exhibit, R&R&R, runs simultaneously with the work of Adam Welch, 2008 Emerging Artist of the Year, through November 2. Supplementing their exhibitions, Welch presents an artist's talk on September 25, and

Stephanie Syjuco (Kraus Visiting Assistant Professor of Art) and Cat Mazza (BFA '99) exhibit in Craftivism: Reclaiming Craft & Creating Community guest curated by Faythe Levine (Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery, Milwaukee) at Lawton Gallery, University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, with an opening reception and curator's talk on October 9 from 4:30-6:30pm, on view through October 30. Elizabeth Asche Douglas (BFA '51) is currently exhibiting her work "Maze," a small wood wall relief, in In the Making: 250 Years/250 Artists at Fe Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA, through January 10, 2009. An illustrated catalog accompanying the exhibition will be published on October 18. She is the curator for the Mavuno Invitational exhibition at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, Sewickley, PA, currently on view through October 10, where she will also be giving illustrated lecture, "African American Artists: Collaboration, Community and the Quest for Social Justice," on Friday, October 3. Janet Culbertson's (BFA '53) work is currently on view at the this is an inaugural exhibition at Accola Contemporary, NYC, through September 27. Jamie Adams (BFA '83) presents a solo show of paintings at River Campus Gallery at Southeast Missouri University in Cape Girardeau, MO, September 17 - October 10 with an artist's lecture on October 3 at 5:30pm.

Teri Rueb (BFA '90) received a 2008 Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction in the Digital Musics Category for "Core Sample," an interactive sound walk and corresponding sculpture. The award is one of 18 selected from over 3000 submissions and and comes with a purse as well as an exhibition and honorary reception at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. James Thurman (BFA '93) exhibits in L'Art pour L'Art, an invitational exhibition of champagne flutes at Gallery I/O, New Orleans, LA, from September 15 - December 1; A is for Artists, Bainbridge Island, WA, September 5-30 as part of The Art of Jewelry invitational; The Ring Show: Putting the Band Back Together juried by Jamie Bennett, Ashley Callahan, and Jim Cotter at the Georgia Museum of Art, Martha and Eugene Odum Gallery of Decorative Arts, Athens, GA, through November 2; and recently a solo show James Thurman and workshop "Wearable Text" in conjunction with the Joy of Text Festival and workshop at Heights Arts, Cleveland, OH that closed September 6. Patrick Meagher (BFA '95) organized an artists dialogue moderated by curator Linda Norden with artists Craig Kalpakjian, Yunhee Min, Steve Robinson, and Alfred Steiner at the artist-run project space Silver Shed, NYC, and co-curated the Silver Shed's second group show Free Dimensionality on view through November 1. Sarah Hatton (BFA '03) will be presenting "Supacollager" at the 2008 Participatory Design Conference (PDC) within the participART track. "Supacollager" is an interactive software tool that allows rapid creation of web-image collages through gesture recognition and web database querying. Chung Cho (MFA '03) and other artists present a multimedia performance "I-th Time" in KNUA(Korean National University of Arts) Art Center on September 18 & 19. Cho participates as a co-director along side theatrical and dance directors, conducting interacitve moving images with performers and audiences on stage. The performace is supported by Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.

Shana Moulton (MFA '04) had a solo show this summer at the Uppsala Contemporary Art Museum in Sweden. Coming up she will have a solo show opening on September 19 in Milan, Italy, at Pianissimo gallery, and a two person show at the Frieze Art Fair in October.

Cassandra C. Jones (MFA '04) exhibits in Ready Set Go!, Baer Ridgway Exhibitions' inaugural show on view through September 27, San Francisco, CA. Ready Set Go! features a selection of works by artists that will have solo exhibitions in the coming months, including Tyler Cufley, Wolfgang Ganter, Tom Huck, Mads Lynnerup, TV Moore, Tim Rodaas as well as a special installation by Cassandra C. Jones that will be up through the new year. This dynamic group of international artists brings vibrant and unique voices to contemporary art through a variety of mediums, from woodcuts to social intervention to wallpaper.

Carolyn Lambert (MFA '05) and Robin Hewlett (BFA '04) are currently featured in a group show, OTHER OPTIONS, opening at Eyebeam September 18, NYC. OTHER OPTIONS (exhibited Spring 2008 at the ongoing Art-in-Context space Goods & Services, Pittsburgh, PA) is a traveling and evolving exhibition of artists' projects that re-interpret, alter, and create infrastructure that affect their everyday lives. The exhibition is curated by Chicago-based collective InCUBATE (The Institute for Community Understanding Between Art and the Everyday), of which Abby Santinsky (BFA '03) is a member. OTHER OPTIONS will be on display at Eyebeam through October 11, and is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday, 12:00-6:00pm. Opening September 21, InCUBATE is included the group exhibition, Democracy in America, The National Campaign, presented by Creative Time and the Park Avenue Armory. InCUBATE's contribution to that show will feature their Sunday Soup, the grass-roots grant-making initiative, with guest chef's making soup at the Armory, and talking about their projects. Jessica Vaughn (BHA '06) is a fellow this September at the Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY. The fellowship will support a body of printwork in WSW's etching studio.

Jesse Hulcher (MFA '06) is relocating to New York City where he will join the technical staff at the Guggenheim Museum.

Lauren Frances Adams (MFA '07) participated in 8-Hour Projects at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, on August 30. The exhibition, organized by Robert Raczka and Darren Miller, consists of artworks created in one day in the Art Galleries. The exhibition is up through September 30. Julia Stein aka JULIACKS (BHA '08) has been nominated for an Ignatz Award for Outstanding Mini-Comic for her comic "Swell".

Ben Bigelow (BFA '08), will be exhibiting a new installation from this summer's Tough Art Residency at the Children's Museum of PIttsburgh, along with work by David Butts, Rick Gribenas, and Wendy Osher. GRADUATE ACTIVITIES

Jennifer Gooch (MFA '09) opens for Grammy-winning banjo player Jayme Stone and kora virtuoso from Mali, Mansa Sissoko, creators of Africa to Appalachia, which uses the banjo and its history to bridge music traditions on September 30, 7:30pm at Your Inner Vagabond, Lawrenceville, PA. Tickets are $10 in advance available at various music stores around Pittsburgh, $12 at the door. On November 1 Gooch will hosts a CD RELEASE show with musician George Neal, for her album Would you like to take me there? at Howler's in Bloomfield, PA.

Riikka Kuoppala's (exchange F'08) short film, "Visitor in My Body" (2008) was screened on September 15 as part of Arctic Hysteria On Screen, featuring key works of Finnish experimental film and video art from the mid-1990s to the present, at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC. Kuoppala is a graduate student at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts who is a visiting student in the School of Art's MFA program. http://www.moma.org

 

 

UNDERGRADUATE ACTIVITIES

 

R.J. Tripodi (BFA '09) presents Safeguard at the Frame Gallery, Pittsburgh, PA, on October 3-5, where he will apply the tactics of his sculptural work to an unconventional art object. In addition to sculptures and drawings, he will stage a performance to restore a thing his father valued before his service in Vietnam. It has been in storage since 1972. http://www.cmu.edu/theframe
